Cuprite [Cu2O] is one of the main economic ores of copper. This is a secondary mineral typically formed through the chemical weathering of other copper sulfide minerals.

Although already well known by a range of names, cuprite was officially named in 1845 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger from the latin work "cuprum" (which means copper).

Beautiful euhedral Cuprite crystal with well formed faces and a high luster from Rubtsouskoe Mine in Wester Siberia, Russia.
