Geologic Information

Aragonite is one of the three common forms of calcium carbonate [CaCO₃], the most common and well-known form being calcite. Aragonite is the high-pressure polymorph of calcium carbonate and is often formed in high-grade metamorphic rocks associated with subduction zone settings or in deep-sea settings as a prepitated mineral from small shelled mollusks.
