Large beautiful cabochon of Pinolith from Austria. With varying and beautiful random patterns that resemble black and white pine cones (hence the name!) this rare stone is sure to make an awesome piece of jewelry.

Care & Setting

Pinolith is a soft stone (Mohs hardness = ~3.5-4.5) so will do well set in a piece that is protected from bumps and knocks like a pendant or sealed with a protective coating.

Geologic Information

Until recently found only in a single deposit in Austria, Pinolith (also known as Pinolite) is a metamorphic rock composed of white magnesite (MgCO3) in a dolomite and graphite matrix. Pinolith was mined as an economically valuable source of trace manganese, and was mined for such during World War II.
