This beautiful display shows off a polished slice of an opalized ammonite. A rich chocolate brown and reddish matrix hosts beautiful quartz druzy inclusions.
Geologic Information
Ammonites were a large group of marine molluscs that lived during the Devonian through Cretaceous eras (409-66 Ma). Found all over the world, ammonite fossils are often used as markers of geologic time. Ammolite, the opal-like organic gemstone formed from these fossilized shells is composed mostly of aragonite [CaCO3], the iridescent play-of-color comes from the interference of light rebounding off the thin layers of the mineral's atomic structure.
