Nice cabinet-sized specimen of gemmy lazulite [MgAl2(PO4)2(OH)2] co-crystallized with quartz (SiO2) and siderite (FeCO3) and well mineralized veins in host rock. Pictures don't do this one justice!
Geologic Information
Lazulite is a blue colored, hydrated, phosphate mineral with a Mohs' hardness of 5.5 - 6 and specific gravity = 3.0 - 3.1. This mineral forms through high-grade metamorphism of high-silica rocks. First described in 1795 in Austria, the name comes from the german word lazurstein for "blue stone".
