Goethite [α-Fe3+O(OH)] is the most common iron oxide mineral on Earth. It is created through the weathering of Fe-bearing minerals and is common in sediments. It was officially named in 1806 for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the Cheif Minister of the State of Weimar.
