Beautiful and rare showpiece cabochon of Disaster Peak Jasper. This deposit is no longer mined, so only limited quantities of this material are available. This is one of my favorite pieces! It is reminiscent of a night sky view of an aurora and will make an amazing piece to wear in a pendant, bracelet, broach, belt buckle or anything else you can imagine.

Care & Setting

Disaster Peak Jasper is a relatively soft stone (Mohs hardness = ~6.5-7) so will do well set in a piece that is protected from bumps and knocks like a pendant.

Geologic Information

With its summit at an elevation of 2,340 meters (7,690 feet), Disaster Peak sits in a harsh and rugged mining district in northern Nevada. Standing at the western edge of the McDermitt Caldera Complex - thought to be the oldest in the sequence of volcanic calderas created by the Yellowstone hotspot - Disaster Peak is surrounded by a complex sequence of rocks with a very violent history. Categorized as a jasper, I have heard this described both as a flow rhyolite and also as lithified sedimentary deposit but without more exacting geological investigation it is hard to verify its true origin.

This material takes a nice polish and features stunning landscape patterns with the best pieces showing a beautiful blue glow in between some of the layers when finished.
