Relatively recently discovered, chrome diopside is mined almost exclusively from a few deposits in eastern Siberia. Chrome diopside is a pyroxene mineral with the formula CaMgSi2O6. It is part of a solid-solution series between the Mg-rich end-member diopside and the Fe-rich end member hedenbergite [CaFeSi2O6. The "chrome" modifier comes from the chromium impurities that impart the green coloring.
Mounted in a small display box with a label bearing the mineral name, chemical formula, and origin, this beautiful euhedral, naturally terminated chrome diopside specimen will make a great addition to any mineral collection.
