Schorl [Na(Fe2+3)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH)] was discovered as early as 1500 AD and perhaps earlier. The first written mention of the name and an accurate description of the mineral is noted in 1505 AD!
A cyclosilicate (named for the shape of it's crystal structure), schorl is also called black tourmaline and is a member of the tourmaline group of minerals.
This beautiful specimen displays a well formed, lustrous, euhedral, single crystal with a natural termination which is mounted in a small display box with a label bearing the mineral name, chemical formula, and origin.
